Bedroom Furniture: Oak, Pine & Set Ranges Compared

Measure the alcove, ceiling and door swing before choosing a finish. A wardrobe that's too tall by two centimetres is still the wrong wardrobe, and measuring the ceiling in the middle of the room won't tell you whether it fits beneath the alcove's coving.
Read the construction words next: solid wood, veneer and foil-wrapped board wear differently, even when the colour looks similar. Match the bedside table's height to the mattress top, too, so you can reach a glass without leaning down over the edge.
Furniture needs room to open as well as stand
Width and height aren't enough unless you leave space for doors and drawers. Compare wardrobes against the ceiling inside the alcove, including coving, and measure the width at skirting height and at the top because walls can lean.
Hinged doors need their own width again to open, while sliding doors need no outward swing. Leave the full drawer depth clear in front of a chest. Use the room-fit tool to check these spaces before filling the gap beside your bed.
Delivery access needs a separate check because a built wardrobe may fit the bedroom but fail to turn on the landing. Flat-pack boxes are long and heavy, too. Check the route with the access tool, including the turn into the bedroom.
Construction matters more than the wood colour
Solid oak or pine gives you more scope to repair dents than a wood-effect surface. Solid wood is heavier, but you can sand and re-oil it. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood over a board core, so chipped edges can't be sanded back like solid timber.
Foil-wrapped or melamine board is generally the cheapest option: a printed surface over chipboard or MDF that wipes clean. Corners can peel, and wet board swells. Keep it away from persistent damp rather than paying for a finish you'll struggle to repair.
Look inside chests of drawers before choosing by the front. Wooden runners stick in damp rooms, while metal runners glide and soft-close fittings cost more. Thin hardboard backs and drawer bottoms are the weak points where cheap furniture gives first.
Bedside height and assembly affect everyday value
Your bedside table should sit level with, or slightly above, the mattress top. Measure the made bed rather than the frame. Reaching sideways for a lamp is easier when the table surface isn't below the edge of the mattress.
At the foot of the bed, a blanket box holds a duvet and doubles as a seat, but a large box crowds a small room. Measure its footprint first. Fix wardrobes and tall chests to the wall with the brackets provided, particularly if small children play nearby.
Assembly is an ownership cost even when you don't pay someone else to do it. Allow hours before a single jumper goes away, plus another person to help stand the wardrobe upright. Delivery day isn't necessarily putting-away day.
Avoid these furniture mistakes
- Ordering to the ceiling height measured outside the alcove.
- Hinged doors without clearance for the wardrobe plus a door.
- Foil-wrapped board beside a bath or leaking radiator.
- Bedside tables below the mattress top.
- Tall chests left unfixed where small children play.
