For a while now, I have been wanting to get hands-on with the Hypnos brand as it stood tall and prestigious on our sales floor. And what's better to try first than the crowning glory of its range, the Hypnos Whitehaven Superior Wool Mattress. Given Hypnos' inherent reputation as an esteemed mattress manufacturer in the UK and the roaring positivity of customer reviews, I embarked on my in-store testing journey with high expectations. Now, post my scrutinising review, I am poised to present my opinions.
Slipping beneath the sheets, I was immediately greeted by a smooth, cool sensation, courtesy of the Egyptian 100% cotton cover enveloping the mattress. Not only does this premium fabric emit an aura of luxury, but it is also breathable and insulating, forming a perfect guard against those pesky night sweats. Unquestionably, there's something reassuringly redolent about the cotton feel, transporting me hours forward to a night of restful slumber.
Piercing the cotton fabric layer with my suited body weight, I could feel the unique ReActive™ 7-turn pocket spring technology springing into action. What impressed me right away was how these individually responsive springs innately recognised my body's unique curves and provided the needed support. Picture this, the more you press, the more they flex; adjusting, supporting, and adding to your comfort. Sublime!
Next on my review radar were two fleeces of RWS Wool, a novel tantalising addition. Diving into my personal test routine, I flipped and turned, trying various sleep positions to check out the hypothesised benefits. Spot on as claimed, these wool fibres acted as an excellent temperature regulator, wicking away moisture and reducing humidity that could otherwise disrupt a good night's sleep.
The eOlus™ recycled comfort layer sandwiched between the layers, touted as a major eco-friendly addition, attracted my curious gaze. That it was made from recycled polymer bottles definitely caught my attention. However, while the characteristic was undeniably noble from an environmental perspective, I did find myself wrestling with scepticism about its durability and long-term implications. How would this layer stand up in a few years? It's a question that only a home trial and time may truly answer.
While I admired the brand's commitment to sustainability, as emphasised by its recyclable packaging and recycled layer, I could not help but wonder about its practicality. Could this eco-friendliness compromise luxury and comfort in any way? I felt the medium comfort level was just about right for me. However, I found mixed reviews amongst customers. While side sleepers like myself found the adequate cushioning appealing, back sleepers mentioned a preference for a slightly firmer mattress for better contouring and support.
A critical insight from my testing was that the Hypnos Whitehaven Superior Wool Mattress delivered supreme comfort, largely due to the clever integration of its natural and recyclable components. But the biggest pay-off was the peaceful night of uninterrupted sleep it promised. It certainly wasn't 'perfect', but then again, is anything ever?
If I had to make an informed decision, and looking at the product from a value perspective, the smarter choice would fall towards purchasing this mattress. The woolly comfort, responsive spring technology, and eco-friendly construct are substantial reasons to invest. Simply put, the Hypnos Whitehaven Superior Wool Mattress aims to redefine the standards of comfort and, I must say, it does a pretty good job of it.

We have took a deep dive into the specifications and customer reviews to bring the below dataset. Be advised that the modelling assumes average weight and so suitability may vary.
For back sleepers, the level of support a mattress provides is influenced by its firmness and the type of support layer used, with considerations tailored to those of an average build to ensure proper spinal alignment and comfort.
For side sleepers, it’s important to have a mattress with a supportive tension that strikes the right balance—neither too firm nor too soft. This ensures the hips and shoulders can sink adequately, promoting proper spinal alignment and overall comfort.
For stomach sleepers, a mattress should provide a firm and supportive base layer to offer adequate body contouring and prevent aches and pains. The level of support needed may vary depending on your body type and build.
Mattresses designed with breathable materials enhance airflow, allowing heat to dissipate and helping to regulate your body temperature throughout the night. This not only keeps you comfortable but also provides a hygienic sleeping environment.
Some materials, such as memory foam, can make it harder to move or reposition yourself as you sleep, due to their contouring nature. Similarly, pillow-top designs, while offering a plush feel, can reduce movement making turning more challenging.
Stability is influenced by the type of support layer used, affecting edge-to-edge support and the prevention of roll-together. For instance, pocket springs with a firmer tension typically offer greater stability compared to softer open coil designs.
Rotating your mattress regularly is key to keeping it in great shape, and built-in handles make this task much easier. This is particularly handy for larger, heavier mattresses that can be cumbersome to move.
Some mattresses, especially those made with memory foam or delivered as rolled bed-in-a-box options, may have a noticeable smell when first unpacked. This initial odour usually fades significantly within 24 hours as the materials air out.
In some mattresses, certain material compositions can lead to a longer-lasting odour that may persist beyond the typical airing-out period. This is more common in products with dense foams or certain adhesives, but proper ventilation can help reduce the scent over time.

After spending a few nights on this mattress, I noted improved sleep quality. The eco-friendly features are a nice touch, but it would've been better if the product was a tad firmer.
