When it comes to choosing the perfect mattress, comfort and support are paramount. The aim is to sleep soundly and wake up feeling rejuvenated after a blissful night’s rest. One mattress that caught my attention recently was the Penzance Backcare Mattress. Created by Bensons for Beds, this mattress prides itself on offering premium comfort and firm support.
Made in a British Kitemark™ Quality Accredited factory, the Penzance Backcare Mattress includes an impressive roster of features. It boasts 1000 pocket springs that adapt individually to your body movement, promising premium responsive support. A welcomed contrast to my usual experience of springs that seem to work against, rather than with, the contours of my body. With a comforting Damask cover, the mattress assures you a soft, durable, and breathable sleeping surface.
What piqued my interest was the claim of this mattress being double-sided or seasonal. This design feature allows one side to offer a cosy layer of wool, perfect for keeping you warm in the colder months, while the other side features a breathable and hypoallergenic comfort layer, made from 42% recycled materials, intended to keep you cooler during warmer nights. Simply flip the mattress to match your seasonal preference; an invaluable feature if you frequently find yourself kicking the covers off during those summer nights.
The Penzance Backcare Mattress is completed with dynamic reinforced edge support. This can optimise the sleep surface right to the edge of the mattress, reducing roll-off. A feature I’ve found increasingly essential, being an avid reader who enjoys snuggling with a good book to the side of the bed right before sleeping.
All these features are encased within a durable woven Belgian Damask fabric, which makes the mattress soft to touch yet firmly built to withstand the test of time. If you factor in the hand tufting that ensures an additional layer of support while retaining the mattress shape, you have yourself a well-built, thoughtful piece of sleep-inducing real estate.
Upon testing the mattress in store, I found the firmness - rated as firm and also available in extra firm as the Penzance Ortho Backcare - to be incredibly comfortable, particularly for lying flat on my back. However, for those who sleep on their stomach or side, or possess an hourglass figure, it could conceivably offer resistance. This is because individuals with such sleep preferences generally require a mattress with more sinkage to accommodate their particular pressure points.
That said, if you're an exclusive back sleeper like me, the firmness of this mattress could prove to be your ideal fit. I was, however, a bit apprehensive when I noticed some fibres from the mattress on my clothes after the in-store test. One would expect better from a seemingly quality product, and this can certainly be a red flag for anyone with sensitive skin or allergic to wool.
Many customers found the Penzance Backcare Mattress extremely comfortable, praising its balancing act between hardness and pliability. A handful of them have hailed it as the best they've ever found, enhancing their quality of sleep and addressing back pain issues.
That said, some potential buyers have expressed notable concerns. A few found fibres of the mattress coming off, some even surmised this to be a wool fibre issue affecting people allergic to wool. There were also some complaints among buyers who’ve owned the mattress only for a short while, noting a sag in the middle. This could be an issue for people in the average weight category who may fear a potential premature replacement of the mattress.
The Penzance Backcare Mattress does have strong selling points such as its firmness, premium comfort, and clever double-sided design. It indeed made for a supportive sleep during my brief in-store trial, particularly from a back-sleeping context. However, potential issues with the wool fibres, durability and suitability for all body types might mean this mattress may not be everyone's cup of tea.
Overall, while the Penzance Backcare Mattress boasts an impressive collection of features catering to specific sleep preferences, it presents a mixed bag in terms of customer satisfaction. Therefore, while it might be heaven for some (like me, a definite back sleeper), it could be less than dreamy for others.

A decent choice for back sleepers who need a firm surface, though I didn't find it super comfortable. The seasonal flip feature is helpful for adjusting to the temperature variations though.
Specifications without the jargon, easy to understand and digest.
